FM 2 Bay Antenna
You have found the page for RadioKitsap an organization formed to bring a LPFM station to Bremerton that serves all of Kitsap County. We have started initiative because we believe that there is a gap in media servicing Kitsap county and we aim to change this. Because of the Proximity to Seattle, Tacoma, Everett, Olympia and most radio stations stations being located on Cougar, West Tiger they have an effective service area that covers from South to Tumwater , North to Marysville, East to North Bend, West to Shelton. Because of these massive service areas and the diversity of community spread across the region the majority of focus stays generic and on the largest of the population centers. Put another way Its all about Seattle with a little Tacoma sprinkled in unless its of regional or national importance. This leaves the local communities without without a outlet to talk about successes, failures, challenges, local arts, and entertainment that are focused on there local communities. There is no doubt that social media and online communications have been key especially over this past year with Covid. On the other hand social media as a whole is an echo chamber where the algorithm tries further engage along shared topical interests and not necessarily within the same community. This is where we believe a Kitsap focused local radio station comes in.
Right now this is not much more then an idea, domain name, website, social media, and a demo stream. We have a long road ahead but the 501c3 paper work is filed, Initial engineering work is in flight. Now its time to start engaging with the community. What do we want from a local News, Information, Arts, and Entertainment stations? What segments of our population are missing a voice or don’t have easy access to information about what is going on in the community?
A little bit about me. I left commercial Radio after many years being based out of Portland Oregon primarily on the engineering side. Through covid I found myself looking for community focused projects I could involve myself in and this feels like something that is largely in my wheel house. The vision (which is subject to change) a likely best described as news driven with a top 40 presentation. Forward moving, rapid paced get what’s going on out to those that are listening assuming that most listeners will only give 30 min a day during a commute. I believe this can be accomplished with headline news and information blocks interspersed between local/regional content. Bremerton has a thriving Music and Arts Scene as I have seen first hand from my interactions with Radio Tacoma these past couple months. Many artists live in the area, we have local venues and ever increasing cost of living throughout Puget Sound and Kitsap is an attractive option for the “Starving Artist” with its relatively short commute to both Seattle and Tacoma.
In closing I want to go back to the goal of the project. Kitsap is in many ways missing local focused media particularly around News, Arts, and Entertainment. The existing local media outlets do the best they can but are largely commercial entities with out of state ownership or independent journalists who cant focus full time on local media. This is an opportunity for the community to lift everybody up by increasing exposure to existing media outlets and give independents an additional supportive platform in the heart of there community. This will provide a direct channel for local artists and events to share there projects with the community.
